Alessandra Calò is a self-taught artist and photographer. Since the beginning of her career, she has experimented with new visual languages that allow her to explore themes related to memory and identity. The dominant practice in her work is the recovery and reinterpretation of archival materials: she does not seek to evoke a nostalgic vision of the past, but rather to propose a new understanding of reality. Passionate about historical photographic printing techniques, she uses these processes to create images, artist books, and installations. Her works are held in major collections and have been exhibited in prestigious international exhibitions and festivals.
In 2015, she took part in the Fotografia Europea festival (Reggio Emilia) with the project Fotoscopia, which was acquired by the De Pietri Artphilein Foundation (Switzerland). The following year, her project Secret Garden won the Italian Combat Prize for contemporary art and entered the collections of Maramotti, Donata Pizzi, MoMA, and the Met Museum.
In 2018, she participated in the Circulation(s) festival (Paris) with the project Kochan (introduced by a critical text by Christian Gattinoni) and held a solo exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute in Madrid on the occasion of the XIV Day of Contemporary Art. In 2019, she took part in the group exhibition “Tell Me a Story. Young Italian Photography” (curated by Laura Serani) with the project Les Inconnues, which in the same year was a finalist for the Bourse du Talent.
In 2022, she participated in the Ras Al Khaimah Fine Arts Festival (United Arab Emirates) with Erbarium – I fiori sono rimasti rosa, a commissioned work also displayed at the Reggio Emilia Museum. That same year, she presented Kochan at the Photo Gaspésie festival (Montreal) and the Photaumnales festival (curated by Fred Boucher and Emmanuelle Halkin). In 2023, she was invited by the Italian Ministry of Culture to produce a Mediterranean-inspired photographic work for the Sicilian Museum of Favignana. During the same period, she received the ON/OFF Arles Special Mention, directed by Didier de Faÿs.
In 2024, she took part in the Approche art fair under the artistic direction of Emilia Genualdi, exhibiting the project Ctonio. In 2025, she was invited to create a new work for the Italian Cultural Institute of Cologne in collaboration with the DOMiD Museum and Documentation Center.
